Interactivity #2

The change from teaching students mathematics individually to collaborative lecturing, using a chalkboard in front of an entire class, allows for more students to be taught resulting in a larger number of successful pupils.

  2. This is great because the need for equal access to standard education is a necessity especially in modern classrooms. I like how you related it to your field of Mathematics.Although it is helpful to learn mathematics when one has direct attention from a teacher, it is also beneficial when students can come together and share their ideas with a group. Collaboration and ideas is what makes a classroom successful, not individual instruction.

  3. Kevin,

When reading the assignment, a chalkboard did not cross my mind. I automatically thought of computers, but with your caption I really understand why you chose the chalkboard. I think that at the time, this changed the way math was taught and it is still being used today. Being able to teach many students at one time instead of individually was extremely effective. Unfortunately, I think many teachers are still using the idea of "collaborative lecturing" with a chalkboard even though there is a huge push to place students at the center of learning. I think "lecturing" implies that the teacher is the one with the knowledge and the students are empty containers for the teacher to input that knowledge. It's important to find a balance between lecturing and cooperative learning using a chalkboard or whiteboard.
